Contraindications for Breathwork

Specific to conscious connected breathwork

This list applies to in-person, online, one-on-one and group sessions

Breathwork is not suitable for individuals with the following:

  • Pregnancy

  • Detached Retina

  • Epilepsy

  • Glaucoma

  • Asthma (can participate with inhaler)

  • High Blood Pressure (uncontrolled)

  • Cardiovascular Disease/Heart Conditions (e.g., prior heart attack)

  • Strokes, TIAs, Seizures, or other Brain/Neurological Conditions

  • Family History of Aneurysms

  • Use of Prescription Blood Thinners (e.g., Coumadin)

  • Osteoporosis (if intense movement could cause issues)

  • Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia (diagnosed by a health professional)

  • Psychotic or Borderline Psychotic States

  • Hospitalization for Psychiatric Condition or Emotional Crisis (within the last 10 years)

  • Any other medical, psychiatric, or physical conditions that would impair the ability to engage in intense physical/emotional release

Please note that clients must honestly disclose all relevant conditions, and practitioners have a duty of care not to treat contraindicated clients and refer them to appropriate specialists.
